NANOSCIENCE AND NANOTECHNOLOGY focuses on the basic science and potential applications of low dimensional materials. The quantum mechanics of electron transport in nanostructures is described with the help of Schrödinger’s wave equation, Kroning-Penney Model and Free-electron Model. The quantum confinement effect due to reduction in size in three, two, one and zero-dimensional nanostructures are discussed. The phenomena of Single-Electron Tunneling in nanostructures and related devices such as Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Coulomb Blockade are described with their scientific applications. The spin transport properties and thermoelectric transport properties those are important for designing efficient nanomaterials are discussed thoroughly, A few important synthesis and characterization techniques are also elucidated.
